Polyvinylpyrrolidones

They are homopolymers of vinylpyrrolidone of various molecular weight. Easily soluble in water and in many organic solvents giving rise to clear solutions or slightly yellow.
There are types for cosmetic, technical and pharmaceutical uses.  

Some of the most common uses are:

in cosmetics as thickening agents, binders, lubricants, gels and hairsprays
as a stabilizer of dispersions and emulsions
for the production of stick adhesives
in detergents for laundry (prevents re-deposition of dirt and dyes)
in paper coatings for ink-jet photo

in medicine in the preparation of tablets
